The Japanese athletic shoe powerhouse we know as ASICS was founded in 1949 by Kihachiro Onitsuka. This former military officer was quite the visionary and believed Japan’s post-war youth (who were suffering from low morale and poor self-esteem) would not only benefit physically from sport, but mentally as well. Sticking by this philosophy, ASICS  took its name from the Latin phrase anima sana in corpore sano meaning “a sound mind in a sound body.”
