Nike Air Huarache first launched in 1991 after legendary sneaker designer Tinker Hatfield became inspired by the neoprene booties used in water skis. He was intrigued with the way the bootie conformed to the foot and thought the material would work well in sneaker form. The trick was getting the clunky material and tailoring it into something stylish, comfortable, and wearable.
After working through several ideas, Hatfield came up with a minimalist style that looked as good on the street as it did on the court. The entire shoe boasts a design that in many ways hugs your feet, as the debut ad for the kick declared.
