Boing Boing
For years, Nike designers dreamed of providing mechanical cushioning in shoes that optimized energy return. Starting with experiments by engineer Bruce Kilgore in the ‘80s, Nike finally made a breakthrough in 1997 with the idea of using twin plates with foam columns.
After a few years of tinkering to perfect the technology, Nike released the first Shox shoe (the R4) in 2000. This was followed by various other iterations, including the Shox BB4 (a basketball shoe) designed in 2002 by Eric Avar, the Shox Stunner designed by Aaron Cooper, the Shox TL designed in 2003, and the Shox Glamour designed in 2004.
In 2018, the Shox got a new redesign to bring it into the modern age. Brian Farris, Greg Thompson, and Aaron Cooper, a dynamic design, engineering, and marketing trifecta, collaborated to introduce the Nike Shox Gravity.
With this new shoe came new Shox technology that more closely mimicked Kilgore’s original designs. The leaf-spring construction uses an outsole connected to pillars, a puck, and a plate to deliver an underfoot experience unlike any other.
