BoingΒ Boing
For years, Nike designers dreamed of providing mechanical cushioning in shoes that optimized energy return. Starting with experiments byΒ engineer Bruce Kilgore in the β80s,Β Nike finally made a breakthrough in 1997 with the idea of using twin plates with foam columns.
After a few years of tinkering to perfect the technology, Nike released the firstΒ ShoxΒ shoe (the R4) in 2000. This was followed by various other iterations, including theΒ ShoxΒ BB4 (a basketball shoe) designed in 2002 by Eric Avar, theΒ ShoxΒ Stunner designed by Aaron Cooper, theΒ ShoxΒ TL designed in 2003, and theΒ ShoxΒ Glamour designed in 2004.
In 2018, theΒ ShoxΒ got a new redesign to bring it into the modern age. Brian Farris, Greg Thompson, and Aaron Cooper, a dynamic design, engineering, and marketing trifecta, collaborated to introduce the NikeΒ ShoxΒ Gravity.
With this new shoe came newΒ ShoxΒ technology that more closely mimicked Kilgoreβs original designs. The leaf-spring construction uses an outsoleΒ connectedΒ to pillars, a puck, and a plate to deliver an underfoot experience unlike any other.
